Within 10 minutes of getting there, I had a close encounter with a rattlesnake. If you look at the video close enough, a bit below the "D", you might be able to see it. You can certainly hear it rattle!
And, you know that bit about snakes being more afraid of you than
you of them? Not true. I'm fairly certain I jumped high enough to qualify for the Olympics. (Don't worry, Mom. We did not camp anywhere near where the snake was and we have a snake kit and cellphones, just in case.)Team Gamma found a campsite tucked between three large boulders and were set up in an hour. They are getting better with each set up.
Team Alpha and Team Me set up camp just outside the girls' hideaway. We had a beautiful view and plenty of shade. And Dennis finally got to build a fire! There's been restrictions on campfires because of drought.
Oh, I would also like to point out that we did NOT set up camp anywhere near grass. One rattlesnake was enough of a close encounter.
One of the best things about camping at City of Rocks, NM, is the sunset. Another is the incredible night sky. The more we stared at the sky, the more stars we saw. We even saw a shooting star while laying on a picnic table. Just beautiful!
