A purpose!

When this trip was first conceived, my intent was to spend some quality time with the family, traipsing across the U.S. and getting to know the country a little better. A worthy purpose, of course. Well, it seems that this trip has a mind of its own!

One of our blog readers suggested a "donations" button for the blog. I gave it some thought, discussed it with the crew, then I thought some more. Judging by the response, many are enjoying reading my blog and that's great, but I kept thinking that more could be done with it. Then, suddenly...

I recently became a CASA. That is a Court Appointed Special Advocate. This is a non-political, non-government affiliated, non-profit organization whose sole purpose is to help children going through a family crisis in which social services has become involved because of abuse or neglect. It is strictly for the child's benefit. I am a volunteer with CASA SoLA (South Louisiana), but there are CASA organizations in every state.

After learning of how much CASA volunteers do for at-risk children, its almost total reliance on donations, and seeing how carefully and judiciously funds are used, I've decided my trip could be a great way to raise awareness and, hopefully, some funds for it.

Those who know me personally know that I never advocate any organization. Well, "never" ended with CASA. Please continue reading the blog and following our adventure, especially now that children will benefit from our craziness.

So now I'm perfectly comfortable asking for donations. I hope to raise $1 for each mile traveled, which will be about 6,500 miles. Don't worry. I'm not profiting, although I would not turn down a tank of gas and there's a button specifically for that, below the one for CASA. Remember, the goal is to help CASA.

And please, please, please consider volunteering with your local CASA, if possible. With CASA, money is good but volunteering is better!

  1. I see that you have changed the site design. I like it but I found it easier to navigate the site before with the navigation links. The navigation drop list is hard to find and I can't go directly to a specific post. I have to go to the month and then find the post and click read more.

I see that YoManBob has joined the fun. I can't imaging anyone else having done that logo. Maybe I'm wrong and Peekaloo has started mastering Inkscape.

BTW, I thought a better heading for the "Our Gas Tank" section would have been "Feel Us Up" but I guess that may give the wrong message.

  2. Yeah, I kinda wrangled YoManBob into helping with both the logo and the trip.

I changed it back from drop down. I wasn't too keen on it myself but I wanted to try it.

And, no, I don't want anyone "feeling" us up! lol
I'll go with "take us farther".
