Getting to San Antonio

On our way from Big Bend to San Antonio, we had the coolest ride. Between Marathon and Fort Stockton, we saw plenty of deer and cattle but the most interesting critters of the day were a colony of prairie dogs right by the side of the road. Those little suckers can move fast as fast! I saw one do a perfect swan dive into its borrow, too. Very cool.

We also went through some more Border Patrol checkpoints. By this time,
Dennis and I just wait to hear what goofiness went on in the minivan while they were crossing. Fortunately, none of us were arrested so they must not have goofed off too much.

We made it to Fort Stockton, TX easily enough and got settled at a motel. Up until now, whenever we stayed at a motel, one or both rooms would have at least a microwave. Not this time. Annoyed and tired, I decided to just order pizza. Word to the wise: never, EVER order pizza from Pizza Hut in Fort Stockton. It took almost 2 hours to arrive and all 3 pizzas were barely warm. A huge waste of money.

Our stay in Junction, TX was much better. No, the motel didn't have a microwave - again. So, what's a resourceful mom to do? I set up the camp stove just outside the motel room and proceeded to cook supper. I was going to do it in the room but it had a sprinkler system and I did not feel like having to explain myself to the fire department.

Once in San Antonio, we again got motel room. In or near big cities, lodging is easier to find than campgrounds. By now we were also tired of camping. There's a lot to be said for a hot shower, comfy bed and air conditioning after a month on the road. This motel had no sprinkler system, so....
Yes, that IS a bottle of wine ;)
